Soft Metallic Lips

Four Steps to achieving the lip trend of 2017

"Natural, dewy and fresh-faced looks have always been around, however they have seen a serge in preference lately all over magazines and blogs. That doesn't mean we should all never wear makeup and throw out our 20 step contour kits we spent a fortune on, but it does mean that the world is secretly telling us to embrace our natural beauty. To use makeup to enhance features, not to draw them on."

//

I was reading into the gloss today when I came across a pretty life-changing article (beauty-wise, at least) where Mario Dedivanovic (aka, @ makeupbymario, Kim Kardashian's makeup artist) forecasted the official discarding of matte-lipsticks.

Why am I not surprised? If the matte lip trend really does stay in 2016, then what's next?

I don't know if any of you have noticed this yet, but these days makeup is mostly about how much you don't wear, not how much you do. Natural, dewy and fresh-faced looks have always been around, however they have seen a serge in preference lately all over magazines and blogs.
Something I've noticed is that of recent, shimmery metallic lips have been accompanying the natural, glowy makeup trend (i'm not too sure if that phrase made sense, but let's just go with it!)

That doesn't mean we should all never wear makeup and throw out our 20 step contour kits we spent a fortune on, but it does mean that the world is secretly telling us to embrace our natural beauty. To use makeup to enhance features, not to draw them on. In saying that, some of you will probably know this tip, but I thought I'd mention it anyway.

Metallic lips are everywhere at the moment (ahem, Limecrime...) and they're absolutely stunning and extremely flattering if you do it right. Here is a super simple way you can achieve this look with the things you most likely already have! Now, please go rummage through your makeup and take out your favourite collection of lipsticks/ lip stains and your favourite highlighters (can you see where I'm going with this?).

STEP ONE: TONE MATCH

Make sure that the highlighter and lipstick have the same undertone; whether it be a cool-toned pink highlighter with a baby pink lipstick, or a warm, golden eyeshadow with a fire-engine red lipstick.  I personally use the shade "Champagne Truffle" from the Too faced Chocolate bar palette over NYX's Lip lingerie in "Lace detail" as they have the same undertone. If you feel like you want to play around with things a bit, there's nothing stopping you from mixing and matching to see what you can come up with. Whatever you choose, the result will be pretty cool.

STEP TWO: PREP

If you want the most out of this look, it's best to find some illuminating primer and mix it in with some lip-balm. I used the Lush "Feeling Younger Skin Tint" and some honey-based lip balm to start off with.

 STEP THREE: APPLY

Apply the lipstick carefully, focussing on the outer corners rather than the centre (where the highlight will go).

STEP FOUR: HIGHLIGHT

Take your chosen highlighter and gently dab it on the centre bottom lip and the centre top lip (when the sun hits this area it will make your lips look bigger).

Lipstick: Chanel Rouge Allure in "Pirate", Highlight: "Kitten" from Stila

Aaaand that's it! This tip is so simple, and you can do it with any lip colour to take your look up a level.

Some Cool Combos:

Red Lipstick & gold highlight

Clear Gloss & pink highlight

Lip Balm & gold highlight

Dark plum & light silver highlight

What do you guys think? Should we stick to matte or try something new?

Until next time xx

  2. I personally am not a fan of matte even though I do have some matte lipsticks like Mac candy yum yum I tend to put a satin one on top as I just don't like a dry look, I like this and you are really pretty!

    1. Thank you so much! And I completely get where you're coming from. Soft-matte lips can look really pretty, but it only lasts for a super short amount of time. I feel like this look is a lot more versatile :)

  7. I really like this look, and I particularly enjoy the fact that you used already existing products to achieve it rather than using a metallic liquid lipstick, especially since I love my Chanel Rouge Allure lipsticks!
